terrible eczema any tips

Ds is three and always had eczema but nothing to bad,anyway the last month it seems a running battle to control it,been to gp usual steroid cream and E45,my mums also been to local health shop seems to have made it worse.

Try and bath him in plain water and only every 3/4days (thought this would rest the skin)but hasnt,havent changed w.powder or anything but tommorrow going to wash all his clothes seperate to ours (could do with some recomendations on this please)ang generally any tips or advice would be great as its starting to bother him.

It could be the heat - my DS's has flared up in the last month or so too, his legs are terrible and I went to the doctors today to get the 2.5% steroid cream and changed moisturizer to double base, as friends say it is better. As my post says, I am going to a homeopath tomorrow and allergy specialist. Do you have pets? My DS is allergic to cats (we have 2, although it is likely he is de-sensitized to ours), and I am going to try and find them another home. Have you been using suncream - these can also cause flare-ups.

hi,yeah we do have a cat and sometimes find her on his bed (never thought of that)

Hasnt had to much suncream on,when it was cooler i was putting him in long trousers but now the weathers warm he wears 3/4 length shorts but he is scratching,what washing liquid/powder do u use as there quiet a choice.

I make sure all the bedroom doors are shut these days. I usually just use the Waitrose own brand non-biological powder, but have just switched to Surcare this week, which is supposed to be specially formulated for sensitive skin and is sponsored by talkeczema.com

DD had dreadful eczema when tiny and had to keep using steroids till someone recommended the Body Shop Hemp cream. Was a bit dubious but it made a difference straight away for us. I dab it on any pink patches and usual suspect areas like behind knees, side of face etc and it stops it in its tracks. It's £8 a pot tho so quite expensive but you can get a tester pot to have a try with so you won't have to waste any money if it doesn't work for your DS.
Hope you find a solution soon, horrible for them to be itchy in this heat. x

Thanks for the tip wrangler, I will have a look

1. steroid until it has all cleared up and keep applying for a couple of days extra. don't just stop when the redness goes, keep at it until the skin is smooth.

1. use porridge oats in a sock in the bath. it makes the water all milky and is so good for the skin. you can even wash with the oat sock. and no more than one or two baths a week.

1. use soap nuts to wash clothes see here

1. try other emolients. e45 may not be the best for him. we find cetraben best here.

1. make sure you don't apply steroid within an hour of emolient. so..out the bath. apply emolient within 2 minutes. wait an hour. apply steroid.

My DD is having flare ups the last couple of weeks as well, we've put it down to the heat. Poor things, its not nice for them.

We found switching from cows milk to goats milk kept her eczema controlled. Still eating cows cheese and yogurt, but the milk swap really made a huge difference.
