DS INFECTED CHICKEN POX

Ds started with chicken pox on thursday, he will be 1 on the 26th. He only had a few until saturday then loads came out and are still coming out. He has clusters of them all round his nappy area, but he has a big one by his shoulder blade that has a red ring around it then a red line coming off of it, would you say this is infected?? My dd had chicken pox 2 weeks ago and she never had anything like this but was very poorly with it. Any advice please?? Thanks.

I'm not a doc so can't say but if it looks significantly different from your DD's pox then I think you should call your GP for advice.

DS (2.6) had chickenpox a few months back. We found Sudocrem (the nappy rash cream) helped soothe the itching (far better than calamine lotion) and it also has antiseptic properties. We slathered it on some rather nasty looking spots coinciding with his eczema, and I'm sure it helped.

DD(2) had chickenpox a couple of weeks ago and she had two or three that had long red lines coming from then. The GP said it was a sign of infection and prescribed her Fucidin cream which she said was an external antibiotic.

Definitely take him to the doctor asap if you haven't already. My DD had chickenpox a couple of months ago, she was fine for the first 3 or 4 days but then I noticed red rings round certain spots and her temp went up. Dr proscribed fucidin cream but next day she was much worse. To cut a very long story short after much to-ing and fro-ing and different oral antibiotics she continued to deteriorate and was eventually admitted to hospital where she remained on IV antibiotics for 8 days. She was very very ill indeed. She should have been admitted to hospital about 4 days earlier but for various reasons (I'm still so angry about it) was not. Had she been admitted in the first place she would probably have been fine. As it is she was incredibly ill for approx 6 weeks in total and now has v bad scarring at the worst infection sites.

I'm really not trying to scare you - what happened to my DD is fairly rare. The point is that infected chickenpox is not something to be dismissed. It needs to be checked out thoroughly.

My DS had this at 8 months old. It was horrendous, you literally could not get your fingertip ANYWHERE on his body without hitting a spot. He screamed when you touched him, so couldn't cuddle him.

The GP said they had never seen anything like him -he looked like a swamp monster. So many spots and all inected. They gave him antibiotics and Vallergan (baby valium stuff), which he had half a teaspoon of at night to knock him out! It worked, and saved me from pulling all my hair out.

He had scars on his tummy until he was nearly 5, but they DID go eventually. He actually looked awful on his body for about a year (the spots had bitten into eczema)

The antibiotics took the infection away within a few days - so please don't delay. I waited a few days as thought it was just a bad dose, but he went downhill fast. He also had spots down hs throat so had a cough for some time after.

Yes, I would call out-of-hours GP now for antibiotics at the very least. This can deteriorate very rapidly.
