Tonsils out

My ds is having tonsils adenoids out and more grommits In I am dreading it. Can anyone tell me what to expect . Will he be in much pain

no idea but we are having the exact same thing in two weeks time. i have been told that he should be ok and just give painkillers as required. i am a bit skeptical but will have the usual comforters on hand.

Hi, my ds had his tonsils out on the 1st June and came home the next day. The nurses encourage eating crisps/toast to help healing and also ice cream as well. Ds was allowed to eat or drink anything he wanted when he came home as it is important to keep energy and fluid levels up.

He was on alternative calpol and nurofen for the next 8 days and then we stopped all pain killers as he didn't seem to need them. A couple of times he woke up at night in a lot of pain and it was quite difficult to get him to swallow the medicine to relive the pain.

He also had to have a cannula in his hand for the op and I was allowed into the anesthesetic room and he sat on my lap when they put him to sleep. This was the hardest bit for me really.

My ds is only 4 but has recovered really well and went back to playschool this morning.

Thanks. Was there any post op bleeding? How did you cope when he was in pain been told to have 2 weeks off school, are they meant to rest all time or allowed out? Glad his op went ok, fingers crossed ours does, can't wait till over tom

No post op bleeding at all.

The alternate nurofen and calpol kept the pain under control so no problems there.

In the recovery room, they gave him something, morphine I think, until he was comfy and then he went back to the ward.

Ds has 13 days off playschool and I kept him away from shops and other children. He did go to his grandparents after 5 days to give him a change of scene. Really, he was better after 9 days but tried to keep to the two week thing.

I let him dictate whether he wanted to play, watch tv or go for a walk.

My DS had exact same op at age 4 and came home same day (he was 1st down at 9am) he ate cornflakes after!!
No post op bleeding and only off nursery for 1 week .Tny little chap but tough as anything..
Dn't worry - the worst part is seeing them go to sleep - heartbreaking - try and get your DH to do it!
The op was a wonderful success for us and ended 4 years of almost constant vomiting - but that's another story.
