diabetes with existing kidney condition

my 5yo was born with just one kidney. The one she has is very big to compensate and working well but at first sign of uti she needs to be seen by gp as a uti would be so serious and we dont want the one kidney to be damaged.

Now she was taken to gp who sent straight to and e as she had beeen very sleepy and geenrally unwell and she was tested for start of uti but instead had loads of glucose in urine, blood sugar also high, when at hosiptal blood sugar still high then next time dangerously low she is in for observation but they are preety sure it is diabetes.

as diabetes affects the kidneys is diabetes going to be a lot more serious for her than for other children (without kidney problems)?

Diabetes only affects the kidneys if it is not properly controlled and then it would be over a long period of time.The affect of the diabetes would be the same as it was in a person with two kidneys, just have to be extra vigilant in controlling the diabetes because of having one kidney and stressing the importance of ur daughter looking after herself when she is older.
