What was 11.1 ? Hb?

Full blood count is split into lots of sections, from what I remember the whites are more indicative of that sort of problems, specifically Neutrophils.

Having said that the hb would be lower if there were problems in that area.

Try not to worry and try to get some sleep tonight but please keep us posted or we'll all be worrying.

trace2 · 10/06/2010 07:57

may be was hb just said not really anaemic, so thats a good sign but they did say if she kept losing blood like she did yesterday it could change and they would redo this i will do thank you for being there.

How is she today trace? She's used to hospitals I suppose. She's been through a lot hasn't she? She's quite an amazing little girl.

Been thinking about you all morning lovey.

Antidote · 10/06/2010 10:05

Hi Trace2

Here's a quick bluffers guide to red poo. Not all of these are specific to children:

  1. something funny coloured you ate (not likely for her I imagine if she's on special feeds)
  1. a gut infection (certain bacteria are more likely to give you blood and diarrhoea). Usually due to eating something dodgy at a BBQ, chinese etc. Usually have fever +/- vomiting.
  1. bleeding into the gut due to problems with blood clotting. Rare, but might be due to leukaemia or blood thinning meds.
  1. bleeding into the gut due to problems with blood vessels or damage to the bowel wall e.g. scratches from constipation, piles, tummy ulcers, abnormal collections of little blood vessels (angiodysplasia, more in adults from memory).
  1. Damage to the bowel from not enough blood (causes the inner layer to get a bit mushy and come off, kind of like peeling skin, and will heal). In children the commonest cause would be intussusception were one bit of bowel gets tucked inside another.

Can't think of any others at the moment.

In children I imagine your docs want to rule out damage to the bowel (eg due to constipation), infection and clotting problems (blood tests, sending poo for testing and temp/blood pressure/pulse) and intussusception (depends on the history, examination, age of child).

The usual test to rule out intussusception is an ultrasound. If your hospital specialises in paediatrics they should be able to get someone to do the test within a few hours if the doctors think this is a possibility. We sometimes get babies transferred in from other hospitals to rule this out. At a big hospital we do about 3-4 scans a week to look for it, maybe 1 or 2 are positive.

I hope that helps you, and isn't too much information / more confusing.

The doctors and nurses know that a lot of the information they give parents when children are unwell goes in one ear and out the other because of the stress and because it is unfamiliar. Don't be embarrassed to ask them to go over it again.

Hope your dd is on the mend. Let us know how she is getting on.

trace2 · 10/06/2010 21:45

thank you all for thinking of her! she still in and she not very well today they ruled out intussusception as she had a scan and there was bits they could not see clearly due to gas, and things so thinking if she don't improve do an other scan, she as had more blood today again 3 nappies the last on as been sent off as the last one as not grown any thing yet, but they have suggested polyps, but dd dont show pain but i know she is so i said can she have some painkiller to see if she improves , and guess what after 3o mins she did for a short time. she is due to have an mir on sat at an other hospital under a general and they have tried to get it organised to have her bowls checked going up , but to short notice so i am going to cancel that tomorrow i dont want her going under a general if she may need an other in a days time,

Antidote thank you ! for the info

well shes 3 tomorrow looks like she will be pending it in hospital

countrylover · 11/06/2010 08:16

just to let you know that DS1 had this when he was three months old. jelly like blood mucus in his nappy for about four days. we had loads of tests done and they ruled out anything major. in the end they put it down to a tear in his back passage somewhere and it never came back again.

trace2 · 11/06/2010 08:39

countrylover thank you for sharing i really hope that's my dd problem but she still bleeding and quiet a bit too i think this is why they concerned plus she not well at all.
