DD overdosed on calgel - advice please

DD is 3. DS is 7mo and teething. While I was doing dinner and DH was dozing, DD got the calgel from my bag and ate a few lumps - I think all together about 1/3 of a tube.

DD has had 2 glasses of water and cleaned her teeth and is happily chatting away and eating with no pause in the constant chatter ill effects. She is able to swallow without a problem.

We're on holiday in France at the moment so I am reluctant to head over to a hospital and practise my GCSE french unless it is really necessary - how worried should I be and what should I look out for?

What are the active ingredients?

Lidocaine Hydrochloride.

I don't have access to toxbase from home, she does need checking over though as it does cause problems if she's taken too much. It's best to err on the safe side.

Can you phone NHS direct from France?

You can't get NHS direct. I tried. My mum phoned them but they couldn't advise anything because we're not in the UK and they didnb't have access to the database .

You can phone the UK poison's hotline from France.

Lidocaine messes about with the plasma concentrations in the blood, your daughter needs checking over by a doctor.

But tbh I would just go to the local hospital.

I would err on the side of caution and take her in.

Try not to panic, I'm sure she'll be fine but to be on the safe side I'd get her checked.
Can't your mum call NHS direct again and pretend you're in the UK?! Seems a bit strange....
FWIW, my nephew once ate about 5 nurofen from a packet, and the nurses and doctors at A&E gave him the briefest of checks and said he'd be fine, just give loads of water.
Different thing, but I'm just trying to point out you don't need to panic.

don't know about the dosage but lognocaine also ued for heart problems!

Overdose
Suppression of pharyngeal sensation with concomitant effects on swallowing may theoretically result from excessive topical oral use of CALGEL TEETHING GEL. Such an effect has been reported in an adult who gargled and swallowed 5 ml of a 2% lidocaine hydrochloride solution (equivalent to 100 mg lidocaine). However, assuming proportionality of body surface area and pharyngeal surface area, this dose would be equivalent to a single dose of 5.4 g of CALGEL TEETHING GEL for a 3 month old child.

It is most unlikely that, even with misuse or excessive application of CALGEL TEETHING GEL, the large amounts of lidocaine hydrochloride or cetylpyridinium chloride required to produce clinically-relevant toxic effects should be reached.

In the event of overdose, use should be discontinued and a doctor consulted.

1/3 of the tube is about 3.33g, there's 0.33 %ww in 10g so the dose she's had is titchy. They can't sell it over the counter if it has a higher amount.

Thanks all. We took her over to the hospital who checked her and said she was fine. We have to keep a close eye on her for the next 24 hours including waking her regularly to check.

I'm glad we took her and french hospitals are amazing. I just wish I'd looked up the words first instead of saying DD had eaten 1/3 of a doctor...
