Hi Ladies

DD1 has just come out in chickenpox this morning, I am really worried about DD2 (7weeks old) catching it, as she is already really run down from having thrush, a bad cold and barking cough. I am really worried can anyone give me any advice?

DD2 is breastfed if that makes any difference.

My DD1 got chicken pox when DD2 was only 3 weeks old. DD2 was run down after being ill as a newborn and despite being breastfed got chicken pox at 5 weeks. She was fine and probably coped better than dd1.

I presume you have had Cpox? If so Bfeeding should help as you will pass on some of your immunity (as I understand it). DD1 had it when DD2 was 8 months and Bfed and DD2 escaped it, so fingers crossed for you.

Thanks for your responses, they have calmed my hysteria somewhat!

DS came out in chicken pox on day DD born/came home from hospital. I was bf, and she never got it.....so good luck

DS2 got chicken pox at 10 weeks after I breezily reassured a friend who was coming around to lunch with her chicken-poxy 1 yr old that he was breastfed and therefore immune! However, he had it mildly, recovered well but I was warned by the doctor that because he had it so early he might get it again. He is now 9 and so far it hasn't struck.

If you had it yourself she shouldn't have it, if not, your are both at risk

DS got chicken pox when DD was three weeks, and she didn't catch it (after the HV freaking me out by telling me it can be really bad if a baby gets it, I then asked the GP and he said nonsense she'd probably get it mildly if at all). I'd had it as a child, but I don't think they get 100% immunity from bf.

Ds1 came home with chicken pox after staying with friends whilst I was in labour with ds3. I was breastfeeding ds3, and I had chicken pox as an adult, but both ds3 and ds2 caught ds1's pox. Poor ds3 was only 5 weeks old when he got it, and I felt so sorry for him, all spotty and itchy and miserable.

I would imagine that he had it less severely than he might have, because I was immune and he was breastfed, so even if your dd does get it, OP, it mightn't be too bad.

Oh, and ds1 kindly gave the chicken pox to the lovely friend who'd had him and ds2 to stay whilst I was in labour.

Good luck.

My DD1 (3) had it 2 weeks ago, DD2 (2) came down with it last Friday and DH (42) caught it for the second time Saturday. In the last 4 days I have had about 4 hours sleep as I am calamine/calpol/cold drink fetcher for all of them. I hope I don't get it again....I had it at 32 and thought I was dying.

DH looks like he's been attacked by a swarm of bees and is very uncomfortable. The girls aren't helping as they keep jumping on him (well, he will insist on lying on the sofa).
