What do chicken pox spots look like initially?

DS2 age 3 months developed a few pox looking spots on 2 days ago after 3 days of really bad cold sympotms. The spots are red lumps and some have a white head in the middle. There is one big spot in his arm pit that has blistered over. Now 2 days later DS1 age 3 has come out in spots, mostly on his torso and behind ears. They are like DS2's, mostly red lumps, some have white heads. There are more spots appearing all the time. Both boys have had temps.

I am just not quite sure if these spots are typical of pox or not as they don't have the typical watery fluid. But then again i can't imagine much else causes these sorts of spots to appear almost before your eyes over the course of a couple of days? I think with most rashes all the spots appear in one go not over time?

Huum well they don't look like that!
Maybe it could be something else then? Just seems so typical symptom wise.

Update - he definitely has the pox! He is covered in hundreds of spots this morning and now they definitely look like pox spots.
