Tell me about braces pleeeeeeease

My DS (15) has today had braces fitted. They are the train track type and will be on for 2 years.
Any advice re care and food etc would be most welcome.Thanks

Ta pixie - DS is complaining already and on paracetamol.Nice to know slight pain is normal.
Can he try and eat anything other than soup tonight?

Just spoke to 15yo dd2 who is getting her braces off in two weeks much to her delight!

She says:

Tell him to never have chewing gum even if some say he can. Or hard toffees or gobstoppers (dd1s braces broke with these).

She advises to always take paracetemol before visiting the orthodentist as her teeth would hurt each time the braces were tightened.

If he is having fizzy drinks always brush afterwards as he will be more prone to fillings.

She adds a special note for your ds: 'I'm so sorry. I feel your pain. Keep strong as it will end one day.'

A tad overdramatic there...

Oh and an afterthought - she says if he is given the rubber bands DO NOT eat Korma as it will stain the bands yellow which is not a good look. She says it looks like rotten teeth. Nice.

DS says take the bands off to eat Curry - then put them back. He took his out for every meal actually, but was good in keeping them in at school.

Both my 2 had braces removed MUCH quicker than forecast, mainly because they never broke a wire and always wore the bands. DD also had to have the dreaded Headgear

Flouriguard is a great mouthwash (3 for 2 in Boots usually) and DS found a baby (soft) toothbrush easier than an interdent brush for keeping his trackes clean.

The pain goes very quickly, and not nearly so bad when they get tightened at future appts.

I have a brace at the moment and I am nearly 45 so my advice would be to get some iglu gel at boots if you get any sore bits in your mouth you put it on and it protects it
nurofen rather than paracetamol as it is an anti inflammatory no apples no baguette in fact no hard bread at all and yes it does get better and the tightening is never as bad as when it first went on
