It can't be can it? Here's the symptoms/history (DS is 6.5mo):

Started Sat pm ? extra whingy, put it down to teething but at 3am noticed really hot. Temp was 39degC

Sunday:
-Temp, controlled with calpol, ranged from 37.8-39.2
-1 v 'loose' nappy
-red eyes
-random periods of runny nose
-catnapped all day, but did rally and play for short periods. Still had small amounts of food when offered.

Monday
-Similar temperature
-1 minor vomit 5am mon morn
-horrific nappy - slimy with darkish green tinge
-Catnapped all day again, less play, less food but still had bits, mainly bf though.
-noticed bit of a rash on upper shoulders
-also a couple of small white areas on the inside of his cheek/lip but only on the right.
-Took to doctors. Said it was a virus - calpol etc.
-Bit sick again in eve.

Tues
-temperature tailed off during the day. Only slightly high in eve
-rash more over back
-white bits still there
-runny nose & cough
-totally uninterested in food. bf little but fairly often.

today
All the symptoms referred to above except temp is back to normal & rash is blotchier . Really not himself though, very (understandably) clingy, fractious&whingy even when held and totally uninterested in food - just bf, and even then doesn't seem like a lot.

So googled (always dangerous ) as he still seems really poorly even though his temp is OK (doc said to go back if temp didn't drop - it has) and everything came back measels!

Should I take him back to docs? Am I just being an over cautious first time mum?!
Am also concerned about infecting friends' children - how long would he be infectious for? E.g. due to see friend with toddler on Sat, would that be OK?

My DS had a similar thing last year and googling came up with rubella - the symptoms were to the letter. I rang up the GP and they said it was very unlikely to be that as she has never seen a case of rubella in her 15 years as a GP (me=).
I think it just turned out to be a virus which cleared up on it's own.
Apparently it is very common in young children to exhibit a "non specific viral rash" as it is their bodies way of getting rid of the virus.
Hope he is better soon x

By the way if the temp is really bad, you know you can alternate Calpol with Nurofen - it's quite effective at getting the temp down.

Thanks TheChicOfIt - you've reassured me that it's not too serious. I was fairly sure it wasn't. I had heard of non-specific viral rashes, it's just the other symptoms as well (in partic the white bits in his mouth) had me a bit concerned. He's proper miserable

Do you (or anyone else) know how long he is likely to be contagious for?

I'm not sure - if he is getting better then I am sure he will be fine now, however if you take him out with a rash you are bound to get "looks" .

It does sound like he is on the mend - just keep up the bf and hopefully he should be right as rain in a day or two.
