chickenpox - will breastfeeding prevent catching it?

hi

maybe this should be in breast/bottle feeding, i'm not sure.

but can anyone tell me if breastfeeding will prevent my imminently due new baby from getting chickenpox if my dd gets it? i'm hoping the colostrum etc straight away will provide antibodies since i have had it myself as a child.

so far almost all her nursery class has had/got it, except her so far.
she goes twice a week, they tell me there's little point keeping her off since she's been regularly exposed so far.

Not necessarily. I know bf newborn babies who caught it from siblings (although so far all have had very mild doses, possibly because of the bf).

Your DD may not catch the pox at all this time. DS was exposed regularly at nursery (eventually everyone other than him and one other child in his class caught it) and didn't catch the pox at all (one outbreak was when I was heavily pregnant with DD and I had the same concerns you do). Eventually, after resisting catching it from all that sustained contact, he went down with it this Easter at 5 from what was probably a chance encounter (so far as we could tell no one he sees regularly had chicken pox or went down with it around the same time).

For 1 month only, as long as you are immune yourself. I had the same issue with dd2 being born whilst dd1 was in full spot mode -1 month only was the advice from immunologists.

I don't know about newborns but DD2 caught it at 7 months and had it really badly despite being almost entirely bf (with just a little blw-style solids). Sorry. DD1's case was much more mild nd she was 3 and weaned.

Oh....and only if exclusively BF.

boogeek · 25/05/2010 18:52

Ah sorry shushp - cross post.

thanks for the advice..google tells me that the chickenpox season is generally March to May.

my baby is due at the end of this week, so if he's born near to due date, hopefully the one month immunity will take him to almost July.

so fingers crossed!

thanks again
