8th birthday today. Has only just gone to bed and went to theloo and is cryingout her bits are sore.

I had a look, and seems very sore/or red on inside of outer labia. could barely open her legs.

I gave her a little wash with warm water.

any ideas? will it go down? she stil wears a night time nappy, and has never had this before.

How often do you wash with warm water?

moaningminniewhingesagain · 27/04/2010 22:12

Wild guesses - could you try some canesten cream if you have a late night chemist?

could she have threadworms, they can cause vulval irritation in girls?

QuintessentialShadow · 27/04/2010 22:14

I am just asking, as I have to wash my childrens bits every evening. warm water (no soap) on a soft flannel.

Kbear · 27/04/2010 22:17

I would let her sit in a warm bath to make sure it's all clean then put some sudocrem on the area. Might be her knickers rubbing or she's had a itch and her nails are sharp or might be an infection. I would say that if the sudocrem doesn't make it better by tomorrow, take her to the docs. My DD has had this and usually the next morning it's gone.

MrsRhettButler · 27/04/2010 22:21

salt bath? i would definitely use some caneston, if you have no caneston then some vaseline

Kbear · 27/04/2010 22:22

salt will sting if she's been scratching though ....

piratecat · 27/04/2010 22:26

hiya, canestan i have byt she will proably puch me if i go near her.
the only t hingi can think of is she got some new leggings and wore them , sat down for a few hours at her party, as they were on their ds's. leggings were new and not washed.

bloody hell.

Could be irritation from the seam in the leggings chafing?
I would try sudocreme or aloe vera gel if you have some?

piratecat · 27/04/2010 22:33

My dd had a similar thing and she ended up with a nasty infected sore and I had to rush to GP and she ended up having antibiotics.
I never found out exactly what caused it but she doesn't wipe herself after the loo very effectively and she had scratched for a few days and complained of soreness.

moaningminniewhingesagain · 27/04/2010 22:42

Oh if she seems very sore I would also give calpol or similar to ease the pain. Leaving off the salt won't do any harm, I would probably go for plain water.

SparklyGothKat · 27/04/2010 22:42

My dd1 gets sore and I use canestan which clears it up quickly

moaningminniewhingesagain · 27/04/2010 22:43

Any blisters? does it look like an allergic reaction? Piriton maybe, would ease itching if it's a reaction to horrible chemicals in new clothes?

red/moist rash/whitish discharge, possible with little red spots at edges = thrush, so canesten would be best

if red/crusty/yellowish discharge prob bacterial infection and you will need abx.

calpol either way seems sensible.

sudocrem (applied after canesten if needed) will soothe and form a barrier over her skin.

may help to let her pee in the bath or use jug of water to pour over her when she is peeing into the toilet.

If not calming down a bit by morning then I would let GP have a peek.

greatfiresoflondon · 27/04/2010 22:50

oops sorry , abx = antibiotics

seb1 · 27/04/2010 22:52

Bicarb of soda in bath, sudocreme, some frozen peas in a freezer bag wrapped in dry thick face cloth held over sore area will help take the heat out.

my dd gets this sometimes. I think it's from wee, from not wiping herself properly after going to the loo.

She has a bath every day & if we occasionally don't have time, I will wash her down with warm water.

When it happens it looks bright red & raw & she only ever mentions it at bedtime (after bath/wash) & says it stings, so I apply either sudocrem or bepanthanol. No knickers in bed, to let the air circulate & maybe a bit of extra cream in the morning & it's fine. HTH

solo · 27/04/2010 22:57

Salt in bath water wont sting, it's really very soothing and helps to heal.

piratecat · 27/04/2010 23:00

ok applied canestan, with her totally in pain, but it burnt worse, so back into bath to shower to shower it off.

have given calpol and ibuprofen. still in pain. i din't think it's thrush. nothing in pants, and no discharge that i could see.

just red in an oval shape around labia, but in side iyswim.

bloody hell, she's had suc a nice day too.

totally apprecaiate all your help here, as am on my own too.x

thanks, the nno knickers or night pants/nappies can't be done, as still in them at nights. despite this, has neverh ad this before. i think it's an allergy to the chems in leggings/heat?

Think the sudocreme better than canestan as its very soothing. dd often gets sore down there - she has very sensitive skin and it usually works overnight.
