DS (3) Toddler Diarrhoea/Food Intolerance/Bug??

I don?t know if anyone can offer me any advice or has some experience of this? (Long post ?sorry).
My DS (3.9) had a tummy bug in Feb 2009 and passed lots of horrible, foul smelling white creamy poo. It cleared up after a week (had sample done- came back fine) but his stomach has never been ?normal? since.
He passes lots of mucus ? clear and watery or sometimes yellowy brown ? regularly. He has no control over it, it just leaks out and sweeps through his trousers so it looks like he?s wet himself but it?s from his bottom. He?s bloated, has explosive wind when he goes to the toilet and his poo is almost always quite soft and not formed. He doesn?t have pain as such but his stomach gets very hard and bloated so must be uncomfortable.
Sometimes these symptoms can settle for a week or so and then they just start again.
He is otherwise healthy, putting on weight, eats very well ? a good, balanced diet, isn?t lethargic etc.
He was referred to the hospital and we waited for ages, got seen in Sept and then over the next few months had various tests.
We?ve had lots of poo sample tests done ? for different parasites/bugs ? all clear. He had various blood tests which were all fine and his coeliac test came back negative. They couldn?t feel any blockages in his bowel. We cut out lactose but it made no difference. I kept a food diary and couldn?t identify any triggers.
The consultant diagnosed Toddler Diarrhoea but we aren?t totally satisfied with that because DS doesn?t pass diarrhoea exactly and there are no whole bits of food in his poo which always seem to be a feature of TD according to the various things we?ve read. Also all the suggestions to improve TD seem inconsistent with DS?s diet. He never has juice/squash as he doesn?t like it, he has both wholemeal and white carbs, full fat dairy products.
It seemed to settle for a bit in January but then he had another bug and it?s back with a vengeance. As he?s getting older, he?s obviously a lot more conscious of it and gets upset and embarrassed if he ?leaks?.
We?re now on the list for a second opinion.
We haven?t cut out wheat as the doctors have advised not to because he might miss out vital nutrients. But don?t know whether to give it a go anyway?
Does anyone know if this sounds like TD? Or like anything else they?ve come across? I?d really be grateful for any suggestions/advice.

I have no answers but I just wanted to sympathise. My DD has much less severe issues with diahorrhea / loose foul bowels and we are getting it investigated, mainly because her dad is a probable coeliac (did an exclusion diet after wheat came up on RAST tests, realised gluten was the issue refuses to go back on it to be tested).

The only thing I have picked up on is that there can be false negatives for coeliac in adults and children so a negative test isn't always bthe end of the issue with persistent unepxplained issues.

I hope you and your son get some answers soon

Thanks so much for replying - I'm sorry to hear your daughter has similar problems.

I did wonder about a false negative - will mention it at next appt.

Let's hope we both get some answers - good luck!
