Can I do pale stools again please?

Last night my ds said he had tummy ache, he went off to the toilet. When he finished I wiped his bum and then looked in toilet and noticed his poo was very pale. Never had this before! We had a nightmare with dd last night so not had chance to think about it until now and foolishly googled it. Has he got liver disease or just one of those things? He is 5, very healthy and normal. Any advice appreciated

Could be something he's eaten or could be that he has a touch of diarrhoea. If stools form after a very gassy stomach or if food is not well-digested they can be different colours. Obviously, keep an eye on him, make sure his diet is as good as possible and, if you're worried, see your doctor.

Yes pale stools can be a sign of liver disease, and I think that you can sometimes get them after an upset stomach.

Speak to your GP

were they floating as well? If so, it could just mean there is a higher than normal level of undigested fat in the stool.

This can happen if there is rapid transit time, which doesn't allow for fat to be digested properly (can be a result of a bug; or of the liver failing to produce bile salts which help with the emulsification and subsequent digestion of fats, likewise a result of a blockage in the bile duct from the gallbladder)

It can also happen if he happened to have a very fatty diet that day - lots of cheese, fatty foods etc.

If it happens again, go to the GP.

Thanks, it wasn't floating. I guess will see what it is like if he goes tonight. He eats a lot of dairy (mainly cheese) and had a homemade curry on wed night which he said was a bit spicy for him. Will keep off the cheese see how it goes. Thanks

Please don't worry. After 2 dcs I'm qualified to be as near as you can be to being a Poo Expert (it's a mum thing ).
I remember both my dcs going through a pale poo stage (whitey to yellowy colour). Still occasionally happens. All related to tummy upsets. They were absolutely fine.

Thanks for the reassurance kissingfrogs! He had another poo yesterday and it was darker more a caramel colour and my mum and dp looked at it and said that it was normal and gave me one of those bonkers looks as if I was going mad! Must just be one of those things, there are so many tummy bugs in his class. Xx
