Odd breathing pattern in toddler

My 16 month old son has had a habit of occasionally holding his breath for a few seconds or breathing quite loudly and tensely but his nanny told me he has been doing that all day and I'm rather worried. He is teething and has a bit of a cold. It's hard to describe. He's asleep now and breathing fine if a bit shallowly. I wasn't worried as I think it's habitual rather than a difficulty breathing but now quite paranoid. I've left a call back with NHS Direct but they have a long wait. Any advice?

Not sure if this is any help but my ds1 (19 months) seems to almost pant when he gets a blocked nose. He is currently lying on the sofa with a blanket over him doing just that as he is stuffed with cold and teething

I think it was a blocked nose Frogger77 and teething. NHS direct rang back at 3.30am!!! Anyway I took him to the doc's and they thought he was FINE. I hope your DS is better
