How dangerous is having your tonsils out for a 6 year old?

Looks like Ds6 is going to have his out but somebody kindly told me it's so risky they don't like to do it now. So crapping myself now. I had mine done at 6.

Also he has one bigger than the other and they'll probably do a biopsy on the bigger one-is that normal?

We had ours out as a matter of course (this was the 1970s). We all survived but 'needed' to have bucketloads of icecream. My parents weren't told that it was risky, just that it was much better to have them out when we were kids as tonsilitus as an adult is hell.
