Purple gums when teething?

Hello all... Am sure this is nowt but I thought I'd check...

6 month old DS has been showing signs of teething for a few weeks- slobbering, chewing everything he can get a hold of, etc. The bottom gums, in the front, has raised up slightly so I'm expecting a tooth any day now! But last night/this morning he seems to have developed dark purple bruising on this part of the gum.

I think I remember this happening in the day or so before DS1 broke his first tooth, but wanted to see what you lot thought.

Am using calpol and homeopathic powders to relieve his pain, btw.

Hi, there's a name for it, eruption haematoma, like a bruise inside the gum where the tooth is moving through. My DS had it spectacularly with his molars.

If that's what it is then he'll be fine. I think sometimes it bleeds a bit when the tooth breaks through and releases the "bruise" from inside the gum so don't panic if so.

Now calm yourself and prepare to enjoy his lovely new tooth!

Ooooh thanks for replying. He is in pain, poor boy! I thought it was normal, just that one of the mums at the school gates saw it and said "I've never seen anything like that before" and made me doubt myself.

DD1 had this as her front left tooth came through. It did bleed a bit when the tooth came through, but it didn't seem to cause her undue discomfort.

Hi my baby has become ever so restless in the night and has been sleeping straight through since he was 7 weeks old. For the last few nights he has been screamingand finds in difficult o sleep. I noticed a small tear in his gum and looks sore - does this mean a tooth is on it's way? Any ideas mumsnetters??

I'd say that's a tooth all right. Try to look at in the best light you can. Mine second DD hinda calmed down again a day or two before the tooth actually cut through.
