Feeding when the Child is Sick/diarhea and vomiting

Hello. Please give me some ideas. My son Fin is sick with a tummy Bug and although he can hold down half and half milk and water he cant hold down anything else? The thing is he's hungry and upset? When i give him dry snacks he just throws them back up! I cant remember what i did with my first son either.

My options are to starve the bug out of him and keep giving him fluids- but with tears and hunger

or to keep trying to feed him and have him throw up?

It's heartbreaking when they're poorly and hungry but feeding the bug and causing him to throw up more isn't going to help and it'll just hurt his stomach and throat and keep the whole thing going longer than necessary. If you're going to give him drinks, sweet ones like watered down squash or fruit juice are a better prospect than milk (even watered down) because they don't contain the fat that bugs thrive on. Clear broth would be another fat-free option until the vomiting stops. Boiled sweets or simple glucose tablets actually aren't a bad way to give them a little energy but avoid chocolate (fat again) Dry toast and so on once he can keep foods down. Distracting games perhaps to keep his mind off food in the meantime? Good luck

Sorry to hear your ds is feeling so ill.

I think I would try and starve him for a bit and even though he is keeping down the milk, I wouldn't give it to him. Substitute it with flat Coke (I know this sounds mad - but several doctor recommended this to me and it does work) or a proper rehydration mixture (bought in sachets at the chemist and mixed with boiled water). Both of them contain the salt and sugar your ds needs.

Give him some a few sips every 15 mins until he hasn't vomited for 3 hrs.

Then, try again with a spoonful of boiled rice.

I hope he feels better soon.

Was just about to post the same question.

DS1 is 12 months and been sick since Saturday.

Yesterday held down banana and some fruit puree. Today managed peanut butter and toast and some of those plum baby spelt biscuits.

Tried to give him some mash for tea and it all came back up.

Was still giving him 1 BF a day but have upped that again so he's drinking breast milk and also water.

Hello , Sorry about the late reply. I was at a desperate stage when i posted the above. The i used bit from both the answers and he's fine now. The main one being to cut fat or anything that has fat content in it , completely out of the diet. So instead of half milk half water. I offered warm well diluted juice, the flat coke wokred too as it gave him some sugar! Dry toast, dry cereals, and i even let him have one of my snack a jacks( like popcorn cake. I hope this and the above helps. x
