Croup - anything I can do to help ds

Had to take ds to out of hours clinic last night, as he gave us such a fright with this strange cough and he was struggling for breath, very distressing for him and us Doctors sent us home saying it was croup and it should clear up in 48 hours? Not serious enough to give steroids. Is there anything I can do to ease his discomfort, and help us get some sleep...he and I were up all last night

Steam!

My dd2 gets croup - we take her into the bathroom and turn the shower on hot, let the room fill with steam, it makes a huge difference.

Its worse at night as the little tubes in your chest shut down a bit then. Try keeping a bowl of water (with Olbas if you have some) on a radiator in the room you are in, or a wet towel - anything to keep the air damp.

I feel for you - it\s not a nice thing to deal with, but hopefully he will be better soon!

My DS suffers with this sometimes. A walk in cold air can sometimes help too.

Hope your DS feels better soon it's very alarming when they have this.

steamy bathroom or plug the kettle in and leave the top off and let it boil for a while. Obviously stay with the kettle so LO doesnt get burnt.Dont know how old LO is?

stay away from milk and chocolate as these cause more sticky phlegm and they make the stickiness of the existing phlegm worse
