DS (2) Has 'flu like virus' according to doc.

He has had cough and cold for 2 weeks now, seemed to be on the mend but last 2 days has got worse again, with high temp, red ears/cheek, on and off pain in ears and really chesty cough. Also tonight bizarre 'my willy is hurting ow ow ow' comments. Is this pain related to flu in some way?

Took him back to docs tonight and got anti bio's although doc could not see any sign of infection- I'm just worried as he didnt mention his willy hurtinmg till we got home and Im worried it might be important or sign of somewthing!?

Really grateful for any thoughts on this!

could be a urinary trat infection. really needs a doctor to check it out. does it hurt all the time or just sometimes? after doing a pee? have you had a look to see if its red or has a scratch on it?

brimfull · 16/03/2010 20:43

yes was going to say it may be a urinary tract infection

cocolepew · 16/03/2010 20:45

I'd thought UTI as well, take a sample to the Drs.

glitterkitty · 16/03/2010 20:47

no redness at all, looks totally normal. was just out of nowhere he said it hurted- not after wee or anything.

Thanks for replies!

I thought UTI- would the amoxillin we have been given for ear infection get rid of that?

Going to see if he mentions it again tomorrow i think. He's asleep now.

What causes UTI? I will google, but if anyone knows...

amoxycillin is not used to treat UTI's so i would go back and check with doc. He could have the start of thrush or balinitis

A few years ago while suffering with a cold virus/mild flu DS2 complained of a sore willy. I thought he was being silly but then he said it bled when he went to the toilet so I took him straight to our doctor who couldn't find anything wrong. He said sometimes a change of diet could cause pain and burning when peeing. I'd been giving him lots of orange juice while he was ill in the hope that the vit C would help lessen the syptoms of his cold/flu. It was the orange juice in high amounts that was causing it.

Has your son been drinking or eating citrus fruits more than he normally might?

alypaly · 17/03/2010 00:21

has he had chicken pox as that can cause a sore wily

Amandoh · 17/03/2010 00:21

Just another thought...

When he says his willy hurts is it the actual penis or general groin area? Could he have pulled a muscle coughing?

MrsJohnDeere · 17/03/2010 09:19

Chicken pox? My 3yo had expactly the same thing then, the day after he started to look a bit better, the spots appeared (he has lots on his willy now that are itchy ).

glitterkitty · 17/03/2010 21:38

Thanks so much for replies. So tired but just wanted to respond!

DS has not been eating citrus- diet of ice cream and crackers lately I'm afraid. And he has had balinitis before but no sign of redness now.

But I hadnt thought of chicken pox! He hasnt said its hurt since yesterday- will keep watch out for spots- thanks for heads up!

Actually he seems much better today. Axoxillin has worked really quickly thank god.

thank you all

If it's his groin rather than his willy, it could be irritable hip, which sometimes happens after a flu/viral infection.

My DS had this when he was three, and was complaining of a sore willy, when actually it was his groin that was hurting.
