How to give infant gaviscon?

So our 1 month old boy is having reflux signs and symptoms and the GP has prescribed it.

However there's one small problem - after winding the crying starts, and we can't get him to take the liquid you make up with the powdered gaviscon and 15mL of water.

Can anyone advise how to do this? He's sat with his mum in the lounge crying away right now.

15mL of water when measured using syringes makes it quite runny, whereas guesstimated 15mL using 3 teaspoons makes it much thicker.

Do we:

  1. Give it before a feed when he's looking for something to eat.
  2. Give it immediately after coming off the breast and before winding.
  3. Use the 3 teaspoon method and make it up thicker.

Any advice would be great!

Cheers,

Joe

DS was diagnosed with reflux when he was five/six weeks old. The vomitting stared out of the blue and slowly increased to after every single feed. GP prescribed Gaviscon. However the vomitting continued, which led to one v distressed boy and a mummy at her wits end. Instinct told me to take him back to the docs. Thank god I did as it turned out he had Pyloric Stenosis. Projectile vomitting does not always have to be present, it wasn't in our case. It was easily fixed with a small op but he was very ill due to dehydration. It was a horrendous experience.

I don't want to frighten anyone, would just hate this to happen to anyone else. GP and HV too quick to write me off as an over protective mother. I was even told on one occasion that he was "messy feeder" and I would have to put up with it!

Hope your little one is doing ok.

An update and another question for you all please!

Well, we managed to get the Gaviscon down him - 5 or 10mL mixes, one of those nurofen syringes (no tip so less squirty) with 0.5-1mL parts followed by a dummy for a minute and massaging the cheeks to get him swallowing and sucking.

This has helped a lot - not a miracle cure by any means but has helped.

However.....have we swapped one problem for another? The HV said get 6 doses in him on Friday, and we managed 5 I think, and 4 on Saturday.

Problem today is now he has ceased to poo completely. This is going from an "every single nappy has a poo" baby to now nearly a whole day without any poo at all!

Consequently he's only had one dose today just now as the evenings are his "witching hours."

What do you do in this situation? Back to the GP or what? How fast will constipation happen and what can we do?

What do you reckon ladies and gents?

ive just started with infant gaviscon

the thing is... it says to only give up to 6 times a day... but my son has 8-9 feeds a day.

He is over 4.5kg so is on 2 doses per 15mls

I was wondering... can i cut him down to 1 dose and use it after every feed?
or should do I have to do some feeds without the gaviscon??
