grommets?

Hi - these are definitely needed for DD but the waiting list is long... has anyone gone the private route(no insurance) - any experience?

We might be looking at this too - can you tell me what kind of wait you have been told for the op? We are still at the 'wait and see' stage (3 months now, glue ear continues but no new infection) I was hoping for a decision in the next month, and then the op soon after. Wishful thinking? we are in SE.

Hi - we were told it needed doing in February and are now looking to a date in June...

Hi we took ds back after the wait and see period on monday of this week and was given an appointment of 10th May for his grommets to be done so quite pleased at that.

Where in the country are you OP? Because I know decision to op is a lot shorter than that round here.

We went privately for dd's grommets op, with adenoids out too, but we did have insurance. Once we decided to go ahead with the surgery (after trying different things to avoid it for about a year), we were booked in within a week. The care was fantastic and her hearing has improved hugely. I think it would have cost us around £2000 if we hadn't had the insurance....

we were just recommended for grommets last week and I'm waiting for an appointment but they were suggesting it would not be before June.

If you were to ring up a local private hospital I'm sure they would be able to give you and estimate of the cost (make sure it includes the surgeon and anaesthetist and care)

Sorry can I have a little hijack?? . DSs ear has been perforated and running goo since November, it will stop for a few days once the ABs start working but 2 days after they have finished it re-perforates and more goo comes out (he has had 9 courses since Nov plus various ear drops). They were going to put a grommet in the left ear whihc also has glue ear but has never perforated to help with his hearing, but can't put one in right ear while it is discharging. Unfortunately his left ear perforated and stated discharging yesterday. So now I wonder if they can put a grommet in either ear. He is only 17 months has anyone's DC had adenoids removed so young? (not that the consultant has suggested this but suspect this may be the next option)

Hedgepig - My dd was 4 when she had her adenoids out and grommets fitted. A friend of hers had persistent ear infections which were sorted by a three month course of low level anibiotics - maybe they might suggest that for your son. Poor little boy - it sounds horrible.

thanks runoutofideas we have tried the low does ABs too, it just seem the consultant is resigned to his ear running goo indefinitely

Hearing aids are also a viable alternative to grommits. My 5 year old has glue ear and had them fitted 3 months ago and the difference has been amazing. Hedgepig maybe they would help
