Hello Mums

My darling ds will be three in March and although I know it is normal for toddlers to get ill often, ear aches, coughs and colds etc it seems to be that he is ALWAYS ill. This is only during the winter months - so I am confident that it is not some other allergy - and he goes to nursery so I know he is exposed to lots of different strains and his immune system is developing but COME ON - he is constantly either recovering from a cold or he gets a new one - it seems that there is no break between - he is just always has some form of low lying cough. I have taken him to the GP and they say his chest is clear - as I was worried about asthma. I feel as though I cannot even take him out to the park/walking to the shops without his cough/cold getting worse. He is always wrapped up warm - I always thought that children should be outside for at least an hour or so each day and we love going to the park/shops/walking. His diet is good although I am trying get him to eat more veg - he loves citrus fruit etc I don't know I am just exasperated with the cold and flu season - roll on summer! Do other mums feel the same - or AIBU?

try not to worry about it too much if its not bothering him (i.e. temperature etc) Nurseries are full of bugs and germs. ds was the same and seemed to be permanently ill and wheezy when he was at nursery. your ds will build up some resistance to the bugs now, then he will be less likely to come down with everything when he starts school. Keep taking him out, and feeding him well. Dairy products do produce mucus, so if he's drinking lots of milk/eating yoghurts etc then it might not totally down to a cold making congested.

have you tried a children's multivitamin?

Thanks thrifty

He doesn't drink huge amounts of milk - only morning cereal and seems to have gone off yogurts recently so dairy is not a major problem. I just feel exhausted with the constant colds/night coughing - so we are always tired he wakes up coughing. Usually the cold doesn't seem to bother him much but he did have a coughing fit after being on the bouncy castle which was so bad that he was sick - it was horrible to hear/watch - my ds thinks he should not be taken out for long periods of time when he is ill (but the problem is that it seems to be all the time - and I like to get out of the house and go to the park and so does he....

anyway I am sure we will get through this phase and move onto another!!

Roll on summer eh?

Same here.

seems to be constantly ill.

my theory with my little man is that teething lowers his immune system an dthen he catches things and they stay so long cos he teeths for so long.

he is only jsut 19 months old.

itis so tough going and I want the teeth to be all done and the summer to come and wipe out these nasty bugs!!
