DS Sore under arm

For the last couple of days, DS (5) has had what we thought was an insect bite near his arm pit, just above his nipple. He seems to be in pain with it and tonight when I picked him up to lift him into bed, he screamed with pain and burst into tears saying it hurt (under his arm pit too). We've looked again and it's spread slightly (1cm long)and looks sore and inflamed. It dosn't seem to be weeping or anything - any ideas as to what it could be? He doesn't really remember doing anything himself that could have caused it. He has a very sore throat, caught from me probably as I've had tonsilitis for the last week. I wondered whether it could be anything to do with glands under the arm???

could be a boil or an infected hair folicle? Could you take him to see the practice nurse at the GP and see what she says?

Hmm don't know about the glands thing but infections can be caused by all sorts of things and can spread, so I'd take it seriously. Check again later and if it's still getting bigger or has red lines coming from it, call NHS 24. Otherwise I'd just put some antiseptic cream on it and see GP if it doesn't go away.

Not much help but DS just been diagnosed with Molluscum which for him is a couple of pimple type spots in his armpit, and one on his arm, however they are itchy more than sore.

Thanks guys - Marine what would the red lines be? There aren't any but just in case they appear? It's literally one sore and he doesn't seem to have a lump -it's like an insect bite that's spread and looks really red and sore. It was like I'd stabbed him when I picked him up. Good idea bout the antiseptic cream - will put some on when he's sleeping and see how it looks in the morning. I guess the cat could have scratched him without him realising and it's got infected or something?

It's a sign of an infection that is spreading but I don't actually know how they happen
