Anyone got any ideas about my ds's leg?

My 8 year old ds had a very hard game of football today, and was very active all afternoon. He's just woken up crying with pain in his shin. He says it really aches all the way down his shin bone from the knee to ankle. No bruise and he says he didn't get kicked or anything. I've given him some calpol and a wheat bag and he's gone to sleep again. Any ideas? He's very stoical about minor injuries as a rule, so I know it must really hurt. Any ideas

If the pain is still excruciating in the morning, I would get him checked by either out of hours GP or A&E.

It could be inflammation of the tendons (tendonitis). Worst case scenario would be a stress fracture of the shin bone.

Some info about leg injuries here (you have to scroll down a bit).

From that article it sounds more like tendonitis, as the pain is more diffuse and spreads up and down the bone than in a stress fracture.

I would think if it is tendonitis an anti-inflammatory such as calprofen would help to reduce the pain.

Thank you. He woke up again and is now in the "big bed" with daddy. If this universal cure-all doesn't help I'll take him to our fabulous minor injuries place in the morning. It does sound like tendonitis - the diffuse pain sounded exactly what he was describing. Thanks again.
