In the last couple of hours I have noticed dd (5) has developed a quite noticeable swelling on one side. It's half way between her ear and chin and seems to be underneath the jaw iyswim? She says she doesn't have a sore throat and seems generally okay. Any ideas? Does mumps start like this?

She does have a classmate off with tosilitis, but I assume a sore/inflamed throat would feature?

I think glands all around the neck can come up and down quite frequently in children but if you're unsure, I'd go to the GP and get it checked out. Better that than wait til w/e and have full blown tonsilitis and no antibiotics!

Thanks lucimule. This is in a weird place, not where you'd usually see typical 'kids lumps' i.e. on the neck.

Have been googling and it looks like it's the submandibal salivary gland, which usually points to some sort of blockage with a stone.

Will go to docs tomorrow though if it's still there.

I was cuddling DS the other week and felt lots of small lumps (like peas) around his neck but they've gone now so think it was when he was under the weather. I panicked a bit and was all prepared to go the GP but the next day they'd gone.
