Ongoing respiratory problems - advice please

I am driving myself insane with worry.

ds2 (2yrs 9mo) has had health problems since birth. Breathing problems started at 11 months. Has had repeated hospital treatment for croup and is on asthma medication. Coughing fits are still happening 2 -3 times every night and once during the day.

ds1 (4yrs) has only had occasional chest infection but in Nov was treated for viral wheeze with a neb. In Dec he totally crashed (pale, floppy, couldn't speak, panting coughing) on me and needed oxygen, 2 nebs, oral steroids, then 2 days in hospital on 10 puff every 4 hours, then weaned off inhaler over a week. 4th Jan he got it again within space of an hour, with no earlier cold / cough symptoms - saw GP an had oral steroids and back up to 10 puffs every 4 hours then weaned off again. Happened again on Sunday night. He has just finished 3 days of Prednisolone, is already on Singulairand anti-histamine, and is currently n 6 puffs every 4 hours - have tried weaning but been unsuccessful. Saw GP yesterday who says he still has patch of wheeze in chest, possible infection but wait and see. Now he sounds really mucusy when he coughs although otherwise well in himself.
Trying to get both referred for allergy testing.

Sorry to go on but I am going nuts with worry about the pair of them because I'm sure there must be an underlying proble - not just 'viruses'as I keep being told. Have now got it into my head that maybe they've got cystic fibrosis - esp as drs have variously mentioned they just have too much mucus.

Want to kick up a fuss at GP / A&E but would be better if I had a clue what they should be looking for. 4 hours sleep a night is driving us all crazy and they look so ill - everyone says so.

I can't help but am bumping for you as I've lived through croup for 5 years now and it's hideous - so really feel for you. Good luck x

Thanks I hadn't realised there was an allergy board and have never heard of a respirologist so that was really helpful thanks.
