1 year old's thumb nails falling off

My DS is 20 months and both his thumb nails are falling off from the nail bed. I've no idea why. He hasn't banged them. He's generally healthy, etc.

Any idea what it could be?

I have no idea but my two youngest both had nails grow off. The nurse at the doctor's surgery wasn't sure either and was totally unbothered. No treatment from her.
The pharmacist said it could be an infection from a hang nail [both of them?] and sold us some cream [magnesium something????] which did nothing.
New nails grew back. Sorry not very constructive.

Thanks Fly. I'd never come across anything like it so at least I know he's not a one off or it's a sign of some disease as all the internet pages seem to say! (note to self: Never google!)
