Blue lips on a 2 year old

I've noticed that DS's lips sometimes look a bit blue recently. He's been a bit under the weather, nothing serious, just a bit snotty and grumpy but I've noticed them when he's been well too.

He doesn't seem to be too cold - I've noticed it when we've been inside with the heating on.

Is it anything to worry about?

Blue lips is not good. Call GP or NHS 24, or if having any difficulty breathing, treat as an emergency.

He's at nursery today and I'm at work. But he's had the blue lip thing for the past couple of weeks - not constantly, but I've noticed it maybe 3 times and DP said he noticed it once.

Absolutely no trouble breathing, he doesn't even have a cough or sound wheezy.

Is it really that bad if there are no other symptoms?

you've checked all your carbon monoxide thingies? i do know an adult this happens to, docs have never found a reason.

We don't have any carbon monoxide detectors. Will get some on the way home, thanks for the tip.

I think it is best to see a Dr in the next few days just to check things out.May be underlying health problem, may be nothing.
If you told NHS 24 your child had blue lips they would send an ambulance regardless - happened to a pal of mine a while back. Her lad was fine, just the way he is, but always best to err on the side of caution, especially when a child is involved.

Righto, it's my day off tomorrow so will try and make an appointment with the GP now.

blue lipscan also be a sign of kidney or heart problems but i sincerely hope not

My daughter was diagnosed with an innocent heart murmer a few years ago and one of the symptoms was blue lips every now and then. Although it looked as though she was poorly she was fine and the doctors said not to worry. she is now 10 and i cant remember the last time her lips went blue and her murmer has gone xxxxxx

Shit! Am really worried now. Have an appointment for 4.30 this afternoon. Really hope it's nothing.

All's fine! Doctor listened to his heart and chest and they sounded fine. She said that if it was anything serious (i.e. to do with the heart) then his lips would be blue most of the time.
So, most likely, he was just cold.

An innocent heart murmur can't give your child blue lips btw. Just in case anyone came and read this and panicked!

DS (18 months) occasionally has blue tinged lips, think it's a sign to put another layer on him as they always pink up when he's warmer.

dd3 was really susceptible for this I think she was just temperature sensitive, often got blue lips and in the summer would be glowing red when hot. She's now 6 and it doesn't happen anymore.

actually Wallace blue lips is one of the symptoms of an innocent heart murmer - so even though it is not someting to worry about if you have one it is a symptom - my daughter had an innocent heart murmer and 'i am a doctor xx

I don't understand how blue lips can be a symptom of an innocent murmur.

By definition an innocent murmur means no structural defect/failure. If there is no structural defect or no failure of the ventricles then how can blue lips be a symptom? If there is lack of o2 in the blood causing the blue lips then surely that is an issue and not 'innocent'?

DD had blue lips almost constantly during winter until she was about 4. She was always warmly dressed.

There was some talk at one point of a heart murmur and tests were done but it came to nothing. She grew out of her blue lips.

I think seeing your doctor is a good start but sometimes blue lips don't mean anything serious.

I saw the GP over this with DS, nothing came of it and his lips still got blue easily in the cold.

I think I have raynauds so wonder if hes just sensitive to the cold like me?
