DS started off a few months ago with a skin condition that was diagnosed as a fungal infection and was treated with a steroid cream. Since then he seems to have developed eczema in similar areas (ankles, elbows, knees and tummy)Initially the GP prescribed Aqueous cream which was useless so I went back and we been using Oilatum Plus in the bath and Oilatum cream twice a day. This has prevented it from getting worse for a few weeks but tonight it seemed much worse. He is not bothered by it but just want to get on top of it before it gets really bad.
Have also tried Aveeno but that didn't help much either.
Any advice welcome!

I dont think you can beat Hydrocortisone cream.

Dd had eczema on her face and chest when she was a baby and we tried all sorts of creams. She was finally pescribed Hydrocortisone and it worked straight away.

I would get it pescribed rather then just buy it as I think there are different strengths and you will need the right one.

It was by far the best thing we used on dd and cleared it up within 2 days.

Sorry should have said, the steroid cream was hydrocortisone. It seemed to clear the fungal infection but has had no effect on the eczema for some reason.

There are loads of creams on the market. Speak to a pharmacist to see which are popular and then see GP for a prescription. We found DoubleBase quite good. You need to use loads of Aqueous cream even when skin looks good.

Be careful about using steroid creams too much. You shouldn't use it for more than a few days at a time or it can affect the skin plus it is a steroid and does get absorbed into the body. That said it is necessary when skin is really sore.

If he's not bothered by it I'd keep plastering on the aqueous or similar and keep the steroids in reserve if it gets uncomfortable.

got to ask...why was a steroid cream used for a fungal infection. It should have been an anti fungal cream. It is possible that if it was just a steroid cream,it may well have exacerbated the fungal infection.

ceb80 · 12/01/2010 09:00

Sorry Alypaly brain not in gear, it was Caneston HC (antifungal with hydrocortisone 1%)but it took a long time to clear up and then the eczema seemed to reappear in the same places.

ceb is it behind the knees and in the crease of the elbows

ceb80 · 12/01/2010 10:08

Yes mainly and ankle creases and under arms, few bits on his tummy. Always looks worse after a bath.

maybe go back to doc for a mild hydrocortisone cream just to use short term.(5 days max) It sounds like flexural eczema. Its possible the ones under the arma may have a fungal element because they are in a 'sweatier ' area.

HC E45 cleared up my DS2's eczema. I'd been faffing around with different creams for months. HC E45 cleared it up within a few days.

alypaly · 12/01/2010 11:53

tabby it does appear toclear up because it hydrocortisone and will always reduce the inflammatory aspects....as i am sure you know....Should really only be used under supervision and for short term. Unfortunately with all hydrocortisone creams you often get a rebound recurrence once you stop using it.

ceb80 · 12/01/2010 13:26

That's interesting thanks alypaly. Is 0.5% hydrocortisone mild as have some of that too.
Eczema seems much worse today has turned spotty and is over his bottom too.

how old is Ds ceb.
Excema doesnt normally spread that quickly and it often spares the bottom area...so it doesnt sound like classic eczema symptoms. I wouldnt use the hydrocorisone incase it is fungal or bacterial as it will cause it to spread. That is why doc gave you canestan Hc for fungal growth and inflammmation. I would go back to gp as he may change the antifungal cream

Thanks for all your input Alypaly. He's 9months. Is it the fact that it's spotty that mean it's less likely to be eczema or the fact that it's on his bottom? Think it was definately fungal in the beginning, then eczema in the creases but this spottiness is new!
Will try and get an appointment this week

isthe eczema right in the crease or is the very depth of the crease free from the rash....sorry to ask so may questions. Spottiness that appears so quickly is unusual for eczema as it doesnt normally have a spotty aspect to it. It sounds as though there are two things going on at the same time. With eczema there is always a chance of a secondary infection like a staph infection which can develop quite quickly. I would go back and see doc as something like fucidin may be more suitable for his bum. If the skin satrts to weep get an emergency appt as the skin can break down quite quickly with a bacterial infection.

Wish i could help, you sound really worried.but please dont put steroid on it as it may make it worse especially as there is now this rash on his bum

ceb80 · 14/01/2010 14:59

Hi Alypaly,
got an appt yesterday, turns out he has hand foot and mouth on top of his eczema! Poor little man. Is quite chirpy but the blisters look gross!
You've been really helpful thankyou!
