Problem with feeding or a virus? 6wk old being sick

My 6 wk (tomorrow) son has/had a virus.

He started to get a cough over a week ago. sounded hard and painful, seemed to happen after a feed (bf), and i wondered if it was acid. Anyway, it got a little worse, then he got a snuffly nose, and started to have trouble breathing at night, and the cough started to sound horribly painful and he was not sleeping, and started to eat less, so took him to gp. GP noticed some viral spots, and given the cough and runny nose, said he has a virus (this was on monday) and that the painful aftersound was probably due to sore throat.

Since then his runny nose has gone, so have the viral spots (mostly) and in himself he is a happy content little boy. He is feeding fine, although a little less than he was, I think this is probably just his normal eating pattern settling in.

However, after a feed, in particular at night, but also in the day, he gets a horrendous gurgling cough, with each time he coughs, it turns into a long screech/squawk/painful cry (hard to explain what i mean by that). He gurgles, burps, cries, coughs, chokes/gags and then ends up with spit-up, which at least several times a day turns into proper sick. Not just milk though, it is more gooey {tmi] and perhaps mucousy? He tends to cough like this for about 10-15 mins afterwards, and is unhappy in this time. When it had passed he is back to his normal happy self. He had, before this, burped once after a feed then fine, and short hard burp, and know, his burps tend to be several, whether he is sick or not and always sounds like he is going to be. He tends to kick his legs when he cries during the painful bit.

So, what I want to know is, now he appears to be mostly over his virus, is this mucous making him cough and be sick, given it only happens after a feed, or is it the cough making him him sick? If the latter, any reason why only after he has fed? He also keeps getting hiccups that don't make loud hiccups sounds, but more his diaphram bumping (iykwim).

He is not comfortable lying flat at night, and is most comfortable/chokes least on me (naturally )

Any advice?

Think you should go back to gp tbh. He may have early stages of bronchiolitis (triggered by the common cold virus) and it is worth ruling it out at least, especially as he is so young. dd's symptoms began when she was vomiting and crying like a cat's meow. If his breathing becomes laboured, wheezy or he is unusually lethargic go to A nd E.

He has no fever, has fed fine since i posted and genuinely seems well in himself. the cry he makes after his cough is not a mew, rather an 'oooouch that hurts!' shout, dh says sounds like he is expelling something (the vomit?). He is a touch wheezy, but no laboured or difficult breathing, sounds like mucous that he needs to cough up, this grumbly throat is new this evening.

i meant to add LIZS that, can it be bronchialitis without the fever etc?

dd wasn't particularly feverish with it.

Went to GP this morning, as DS was sick all through the night, and still has horrid cough/gurgling. Luckily he is fine, he has blocked nose/sinus which is dripping down and causing him to be uncomfortable when feeding and resulting in him coughing and being sick after eating. He has some saline drops for before feeding.

All is calm in the Pavlov household!
