Hi all.

My 15 month old has had croup all week for the first time, Horrible for her, scary for me.

Even more scary though is that my 12 week old has suddenly developed a chesty sounding cough. Can babies this young get croup?! She has no temperature as yet but I'm so worried she's going to get really ill.

Has anyone else's baby had croup this young? How dangerous is for teeny ones?

Hi,

My baby had croup this young a couple of years ago. She was a January baby and a cold developed into croup. The doctor told me there is nothing they can perscribe to help but told me to try the following.

Regular use of infant paracetamol.Try to feed tham as normal. Close the door and run a hot bath or boil a kettle and the steam helps them to breathe this should be done hourly so the kettle is probably better. Cold air helps too so wrap them up and go for a short walk. Raise their bed so they are able to cough and breathe more easily. Karvol vapour oil I found had a comforting effect.

You will probably have to have her on you for the duration as croupy babies don't settle easily. Hope this helps but obviously speak to a doctor too.

Croup isn't anything to do with the chest, it's basically pharynitis in children, so the wind pipe swells up and doesn't leave much room for the air to get through.

sorry that should have read "pharyngitis"

Hmm, she does have this chesty cough but the reason I wondered if she's coming down with croup is her 'voice' sounds different suddenly - you know, kind of thick. God I hope not. Thanks for your replies.
