Calpol 6+

Is there any benefit to my ds in giving him Calpol 6+ as opposed to the usual calpol?

Looking at the packaging, it seems as though they contain the same amount of paracetamol in each dose but the dosage chart gives amounts for older children.

It is a higher dosage I think - double that of the 3m+ one. Parecetamol overdosing is a very serious and real health risk, please give the correct dose.

Basically, dosage is worked out on weight, if your DS is 6+ he might need two spoons of the 3m+ one but that is just the equivalent of the 6y+ Calpol, if that makes any sense.

Sorry, two spoonfuls of 3m+ Capol is like one of 6y+ Calpol.

The 6+ is stronger so you can give less spoons of it. My DS was once wrongly prescribed the stronger version, if I'd given him one whole spoonful in a day of several doses it could have caused real damage and he's just very lucky that I didn't and the mistake was noticed first.

yes its fine to give either to any age as long as it is the correct dose in milligrams. The benefit is that you need a smaller amount of the 6+. I suppose that is the disadvantage too if yours like the taste!

Calpol is 125mg/5ml and 6+ calpol is 250mg/5ml. I know this as I had to work out dosages for my baby lol. I always buy the 6+ now, better value for money, although it won't make any difference to the effect as long as you give the right dose.

He's 8yrs and about 4st, Alypaly.

he can take the normal adult dosage then as it is worked out at 15mg/kg body weight.

Does that mean he could have up to 4 x 5ml per dose? Seems loads for a string bean!

check with doc as some say 10mg /kg and some say 15 mg/kg.....so that could make the difference between .

26 kg (4stone) x 15mg/kg=390mg or
26kg x 10mg/kg = 260mg...

depends on your doc really or you could ring hospital as they have proper charts that they work to and their triage department will tell you.
