When did your dd start her periods?

I can't remember when I started mine, but dd is 14 and has just told me she's a bit concerned she hasn't started yet. I thought 14 was quite usual - am I wildly out of date? She is 5'4 and I don't know what she weighs but about average, I would say, looking at her friends. Certainly not skinny. She has breasts and hips and body hair, so she's developing in other areas, just no periods yet.

dd only 3 , but I am sure I was about 14 when I started.

fortyplus · 27/12/2009 08:38

Googled it. says go to doc if no periods by 16.5 years

fortyplus · 27/12/2009 08:39

Oh... that's if you're white. Shouldn't make assumtions - it's a year younger if you're black.

sockmonkey · 27/12/2009 08:42

I'm sure I was about 14 when I started. I think things get set into motion once you reach about 7.5 stone.

oxocube · 27/12/2009 08:45

Is it weight related then? I have a dd who is 12 and v slim but v tall - don't know what she weighs but possibly close to 7 1/2 stone. I was 14 too

oxocube · 27/12/2009 08:48

Oh, she just checked and is 7 stone (45 kg) and 1 mtr 68 tall so about 5 ft 6?

fortyplus · 27/12/2009 08:49

I was tall - 7.5 stone by about 10 I should think - but didn't stsrt periods till 14. I think the logic is that periods would rarely start in a girl of less than 7.5 stone, but reaching this weight isn't an indicator in itself that periods will follow.

purepurple · 27/12/2009 08:51

DD was 12.
She was just over 5 feet and about 7 stone.
I was nearer 14 but was always a tiny little thing.
DD is 13 now and is now bigger than me, apart from the tummy and the hips.

YourCallIsImportant · 27/12/2009 08:53

Mine started 2 weeks before I turned 16 and I remember being told that was within normal range. My mum started hers at 11.

oxocube · 27/12/2009 09:07

Thanks for the clarification Fortyplus

brimfull · 27/12/2009 09:09

dd was 13
her best friend started at 14

Cybilshoeboots · 27/12/2009 09:24

My dd was 14.

MsDoctor · 27/12/2009 09:26

I was ten and a half and about 5 and a bit stones.

missingtheaction · 27/12/2009 09:39

DD started at 10, just before her 11th birthday, while still at junior school

I was advised to watch out by a canny friend with older daughters - the things to look for are a combination of weight and curves. 45kg seems to be the kick in weight, and they just start looking different: not so much boobs but a waist and hips.

I know she may feel a bit out of step but honestly she's not missing much!

MsDoctor · 27/12/2009 12:49

Ah-hem, I was 40kg when I got pg the first time!!

dd's are 13 and 15 1/2......nothing yet for either of them, bit worried about the eldest to be honest. she's tall,5ft 8,but onlt size 8/10. developing in other areas, and recently started to put on bit more weight. she's 16 in june

bruffin · 28/12/2009 12:19

DD 11.5 5,1 and about 6.5 stone. it's not the weight that matters but a certain percentage of body fat

ben5 · 28/12/2009 12:36

no dd but i was 11.7 for first and then waited about 6 mounths till next one and then they became regular

SlartyBartFast · 28/12/2009 12:44

dd was 12 and 6 weeks

and i had just read that the average age was 12 and 2 months.

SlartyBartFast · 28/12/2009 12:45

oh and i was same or similar, in the first term at senior school, i think, so just 12.

SlartyBartFast · 28/12/2009 12:46

i am sure it runs in family

coldtits · 28/12/2009 12:47

Sounds like they are on their way. |Does she have mood swings?

Bizarrely I started mine at 12.5, with an almost flat chest and no discernable body hair. My friend looked far more physically mature than me (and certainly was no rake) but didn't start until she was 17.

bruffin · 28/12/2009 12:48

actually i think mine satarted on my 12th birthday, which was first few weeks of secondary. dd was still in primary.

QOD · 13/01/2010 12:05

WAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah my dd started hers yesterday.
Poor kid told me she had poo skids in her knickers and was a bit upset. I gave her the whole stop holding poo in, line the loo with paper at school and have a poo rather than hold it in......... Am off work today and was sorting laundry and those knicks and last nights don't have POO skids. Her period has started
I had to go up the school, tell the secretary and head (she was in the office) and yank her out of class to pad her up. Poor kid - but oddly, she was totally fine about it. I thought she would freak out totally.
Typical of her though, bless her heart - fancy having to be told at school!
