What shall I do - water infection?

DD 2.3 been to the toilet a lot today. This morning she said it was sore when she was having a wee wee, this has progressed to her jumping of potty crying the last time she had a wee. I have looked and it doesn't look red, does anyone have any advice, I am paranoid it will get worse overnight don't know how to treat it and if I should ring NHS direct. Other than that she has a little cold.

Sounds like she doesn't have a temp then? I'd call NHS direct to be honest. Give baby nurofen to help her - if she's in pain whilst going to the loo.

Thandeka · 24/12/2009 17:49

Give her lots and lots of water in the meantime.

Give NHS Direct a call - she might need antibiotics and they will be able to direct you to the best place to get them.

Bad luck that it's happened today of all days. . .Happy Christmas though!

Just taken temp it is 37.4, I have rang nhs direct too and I am waiting for a ringback, aww poor baby, typical as you say, of all days!

Temp is only slightly raised, could even be just from her cold.

Ps. They may want you to do a urine test which can take a few days to come back so nurofen will tide her over til then. Calpol definitely not as effective, imo.

I would call the out of hours gp if i was you and see if he can get her some Anti-b's. If left she may get worse, water infections are nasty.

Thank you again for all the posts we have been along to drop in centre they tested urine there and then and 3 out of 5 things came back positive so they are treating it as a urine infection whilst they send off to lab. Doctor seemed to treat it pretty seriously spoke to me about follow up appointments etc... so I am so pleased I went along. Thanks again, what would I do without mumsnet!

Ah glad you got seen so quickly. They don't take any chances with little ones and urine infections. Bit of a drama for you on xmas eve though!

Will they wait til results come back before they give any antibiotics?

flippyfloppy · 24/12/2009 21:19

No they have given us antibs said the same as you , they don't take any chances with her age and will treat as urine infection until test results through in about a week . They said she will get a scan on her kidneys as routine if infection confirmed, he was 95 percent it was an infection, poor baby she was so upset we didn't even leave carrott out for Rudolph.

Doozle · 24/12/2009 21:23

That's good, so you can get started on the anti-bs now.

Oh bless her (re: carrots), she will start to feel better soon, next 24 hours or so.

Thanks Doozle, got to go now, loads to do, it's going to be a late night! All the best x
