my 5 year old has been ill for a few days with a suspected UTI (although hacent had test results back yet so not certain). This evening the whites of her eyes are very bloodshot they are bright red and now weeping. She says they are sore and it hurts to close them or touch them.

We are planning to take her back to gp tomorrow but in the mean time what can we do? its quite worrying to see her like this

Probably conjunctivitis - it's not unusual for them to get more than one infection at the same time.

Putting slices of cucumber on her eyes (get her to lie down and close them first!) is good as it will soothe them and maybe take some of the redness away.

what colour is the gunge in her eyes. Is it sticky and yellowy and does it go crusty in the morning

hi
it is yellow but it wasnt crusty her eyes were just streaming when she woke up. My 10 month old has woken up with a high temp (40 degrees) plus the red eyes this morning so we will be making a family trip to the doctors if I can get an appointment for today.

sounds like they have caught conjunctivitis from each other.Use seperate towels and hopefully doc will give you some chloramphenicol eye drops.

sounds like conjunctivitis - but could be bacterial or viral - and if it is viral then it just has to go away on its own.

Worth checking with the gp if it might be bacterial though.
