Infant nose bleeding - info please

Hi,

My 22 month old daughter woke up in her cot this morning with blood all over, she had had a nose bleed from both nostils. This is the first time it has happened.

It still is bleeding on and off, again in both nostils.

I have looked at NHS direct for information but cant find any.

Please can you let me me know if this is normal, why it may of happened and what shoud i do next?

i would ring your out of hours gp for advice

is your heating on and has she recently had a cold? I find bleeding noses happen a lot more in those circumstances.

You need to get her to lean forward so she doesn't swallow all the blood. And pinch hre nose on the soft part just below the hard bit iyswim.

If it is pouring blood and not stopping, then you need to take her to see a doctor (possibly even A&E) but in most cases, it will give up on its own!

Yes she has a cold and a cough. It is not pouring only running a little bit, then it stops and starts.

She seems fine in herself....

If it stops completely should it be ok?

what often happens when they have colds is they stick their fingers up their nose and with the heating on and a cold anyway, their noses are more sensitive and they break a little vein near the surface and it bleeds

it's proper blood is it? (I mean you don't think she's banged her head or anything)

No definately from her nose - she was sleeping when it happened.

it gives you such a fright when it first happens doesn't it!

as long as it's just trickling and she's alright in herself, I would just try and get her to sit down and pinch her nose and see if you can stop it. And hopefully that will be the end of it.

As popsy said, if you are worried, give someone a call but generally, nosebleeds sort themselves out.
