Please help! DD aged 4 has a suspected uti (GPs surgery has her urine test results but can't tell us them till Monday as a doctor hasn't looked at them yet)and has been given foul tasting antibiotics and the last 3 doses have been a complete nightmare to give to her. Can I mix it with something nice so she will actually swallow it? The does is only 2.5ml but she has spat so much out each time I'm not entirely convinced much has got into her system!

Thanks

We found the answer was to mix it with fruit smoothie. Of course, bribing child with chocolate buttons may help too!

heavenstobetsy · 27/11/2009 17:26

fruit smoothie just worked for us, or banana nesquick (as recommended by the pharmacist no less!)

The pharmacist also suggested drizzling it on toast under a layer of jam .....

Thanks, I wanted to make sure the antibiotics would still work as I thought I'd heard you're not meant to mix them with anything. But if a pharamcist says so, then I'll get out the nesquick! I tried the bribe - it so didn't work!!

Hmm, I had this problem last week, and didn't mix the horrid-tasting amoxycillin (banana colour and flavour) with anything for absorption reasons. Check before you do! I found the Child Neurofen syringes good for just injecting it in DS (2)'s mouth! In the end I had to then hold his lips shut so he didn't spit it out! Worked, as he's now better!
Good luck!

Get some mint munchies/peppermint cream (something strong tasting which is nice) and bribe by saying you can have this straight afterwards to take the taste away.

jetgirl · 28/11/2009 11:07

it's not amoxycillin, it's something else which is aniseed flavoured! Hence the tantrums. The bribes haven't worked, and neither did a syringe. 4 year olds are even worse than babies at taking medicine!

DD is currently taking amoxycillin and we were told we could put it in her milk. Sorry op, I know that doesn't help you. Not sure what you would do with foul tasting stuff. Under jam probably seems your best bet.

Cefalexin can be given for a water infection - ive had it myself many times for a UTI and they do it in a medicine for children (its an antibiotic). It actually tastes nice - full of sugar mind with no sweeteners - its an all round good antibiotic which can be used for tonsillitis, ear infections etc.. takes a bit longer to work apparently though than penicillan - I learnt the hard way with my DS who refused take any antibiotic apart from this one.. Now I always insist on it..

if its trimethoprim it can be taken with or without food but it works better on an empty stomach

jetgirl · 29/11/2009 21:28

Thank you everyone! Yes alypaly it's trimethoprim - i think if I had to take it I'd spit it out too! Only one more day to go now hopefully. Everyone's advice has been really useful.
