Infection after minor operation.

DS 5 had grommets put in on Wednesday. At the time they put in the canula in his right hand he complained it really hurt. The operation itself went fine and he was discharged three hours later. He was sick once but felt better soon after and began eating and drinking normally. He complained that his hand was sore though. Had a bit of an unsettled night so I gave him paracetomol. Thursday (yesterday) he was quite lethargic, had a three hour nap and his hand was very swollen. I kept up with the paracetomol. I noticed at bedtime his hand was now red around the site and had travelled further up his hand. Decided to take him to the EMdoc. He wasn't sure whether it is a localised reaction to the medication or cellulitis and has put in on amoxyciilin if it the latter. As I type he still has a raging temperature, but he tells me his hand isn't as painful though it still is swollen.
The EmDoc wanted to put him on penicillin originally but didn't have any in stock so gave amoxycillin instead. Do I make a regular appointment with my GP today and change his medication or allow the antibios to kick in (he's had two doses so far)
Any words of advice appreciated.

DS has a small op on his face about 3 weeks ago and developed an infection he was really poorly raging temp being sick and really sleepy the doc prescribed him a bright pink medicine think that was a penicillin he was also on high doses of paracetamol and nurofen.
Doctor told me if no improvement within 24 hrs then he would need admitting to hospital I would definatly go and see your own gp see what they have to say.
Poor ds hope he feels better soon.
Ds did get worse before he got better.

I would definately go back and see your gp. My dd had cellulitis in her toe and if that's what you ds has, I would get it looked at again.

I hope he feels better soon.

Thanks for your replies.
DS had a very long nap, woke up ravenous, was very annoying bouncy. Back to his old self The hand is no longer red but slightly grey (like a bruise) but isn't painful and he doesn't have a fever. Very relieved. Thanks mumsnet
