help with ulcers?

My DD has an ulcer on her tongue the size of a 50p. She hasn't eaten since friday. Today the gp said it was infected and prescribed antibiotics. But please, any ideas how to stop it from keeping her awake all night? She is in so much pain she can barely keep her tongue in her mouth.

does this happen often? thats quite a serious size ulcer, can suggest low immunity.

what did the GP say?

they are bloody painful, poor little mite - id use anbesol liquid - if she can stand it, would sting a little on application but numb it for a while. also load her up with calpol. how old is she?

she is only 3. Wont let me put bongela or anything on it. She hasnt brushed her teeth for days because its so big. Even gp said it looked disgusting. Im at my wits end trying to help her.

gosh thats really big. Has she burnt her mouth on something. i would get her bloods done if it is an ulcer just to check everything.

Poor love - so painful. My dd who is also 3 has lots of ulcers at the moment - took her to doctors and he says the inside of her cheeks are all inflammed and that it's a 'viral thing' and should get better in 7-9 days. She also can't eat or drink without screaming and in lots of pain...although luckily not at night. The doctor suggested to give Calpol and try and get her to keep it in her mouth for as long as possible as it has an anaesthetic (sp?!) effect...so although it'll only bring temporary relief, perhaps you can try that? Hope she's better soon.

i think if its that bad i would go back and see another gp. they are so incredibly painful, no wonder she cant eat.

have you tried medised for night time? is it still available? that is paracetamol with a sedative in, might give her some relief for night time.

antibiotics should kick in at about 48 hours - if no better id take her back to gp.

DD had bad mouth ulcers (in her case it was a precursor to Hand Foot and Mouth). The GP prescribed some type of gel to put in her mouth which he said was preferable to bonjella because it doesn't sting. I can't remember what it was called i'm afraid, but hopefully if you go back to your GP they will know.

Not sure if you can give to small kids but anbesol very good for ulcers... has local anaethestic in it so numbs area also helps heal.
Could be toothpaste aggravating it too.

just thought I would let you know that the antibiotics are working and the redness has gone. hopefully the ulcer will go soon. thanks for all your advice x
