Reaction to antibiotics

My DD (9) has been taking antibiotics for nearly a week (due to a tic bite). Yesterday, she came out in nettle rash on her arms and legs. I took her back to the doctor who changed her antibiotics. During the night the rash spread and the itching got worse. She is not ill in any way, just very itchy and upset that she is covered in spots. Does anyone know how long this is likely to last?

Has she taken any piriton or other antihistamine ? dd came out in hives recently and it took about a day to go completely. btw it may not be the ab's after this time , a reaction would usually be triggered sooner, rather a reaction to the infection itself.

Thanks! Doctor was adamant it was abs and I did a bit of research and it can take a few days to come up. I have given her piriton (love that stuff) and she is now settled and not scratching on the sofa.

you can get a reaction to antibiotics or any tablets up to 14 after finishing treatment.

If it is just a rash you still need to let the doctor know as the the next time dd has it, the reaction could get worse.
As long as there are no other side effects like swollen tongue, breathing difficulties, anaphalaxis, swollen tongue, it should get better within about 10-14 days.
It is a common reation with penicillins.

Maybe next time doc should give you an alternative...was it amoxycillin by any chance.

Thanks alypaly. Yes, it was amoxycillin. I don't know much about antibiotics as I've (luckily) rarely taken them, but it would seem that it's not uncommon to have a reaction to this one - is that the case?

Our doctor saw the rash yesterday and we now have different antibiotics. DD is mostly okay, just tired (after being itchy all last night) and worried about how she looks! But she's still whining as normal, so I think everything's fine. It's when the whining stops, I know she's sick.
