I have to take DD to the doctors tomorrow anyway, she picks the skin around her fingers and it's infected so she needs anti-b's, went to none 24hr place on Sat and nurse covered it but didn't want to lance etc etc ...

Anyway! She had a coughf for approx 8-10 days when I first took her to the doc, it was keeping her and me up at night, he prescribed phenergen to help her sleep! I took it, wasn't keen on giving her it after asking/reading about it so didn't, cough continued, took her to the doc's again Weds (4wk cough at this stage, would've taken her earlier but we all had swine flu) and she'd been scratching her back/top of neck, doc lightly scratched the area and it went red along the scratch line, he explained the she has an allergy and it's being affected by the itching/cough, and to give her phenergen for it! It's an anti-allergy medicine and a mild sedative, I agreed and tried phenergen, it completely zonked her, she was going to bed at 7pm and waking around 10am in the morning if left to it, that was very unlike her, I only gave her it twice so of course can't see any improvement with the cough but she's being sick with coughing and really is struggling with it, her eyes look drained, almost like two black eyes

I'm not sure what else I can do but I'm going to mention it to the doctor again tomorrow and ask for a 2nd opinion, the nurses on Sat didnt seem happy about the doc saying allergy-phenergen, it's not right to sedate a 3.8yo like that

Doc on Weds said asthma would be more sucky in like, and she's been vaccinated for whooping cough, and her chest was clear, but 5wks of hard coughing, she can't help it so it's definitely not habit or anything, it's a choke like cough where she's struggling

Any ideas what it could be? I've never seen her so tired/drained/awful looking

Hi Claire, my 3.5yo DD has also had a cough-mostly at night- for about 6 weeks now. 3 visits to the GP with no firm diagnosis. Maybe unlucky virus after virus, maybe swine flu, maybe whooping cough-even tho fully immunised. She regularly vomits with the cough and sometimes doesn't wake up during a bout which is really scary -she has no appetite-lost lots of weight now on antbiotics too but am still very worried as very pale and has grey sunken eyes. Nursery very worried about her health and requested she stayed home.
Now my 18mth DD has same symptoms- after 7 days she was sent for chest x ray (gp said chest sounded clear but was a precaution)but x ray showed she has infection, so she is on anti-bs.
Maybe 1st DD is a chest infection too.
Most likely nasty virus resulting in infection but is really horrid.
I hope your DD is improving. Would be interested to know how you get on as I am running low on reserves and v upsetting to see long deteriation without sign of resolution-yet.
Sure you feel the same.
Sound familiar to anyone else? Any advice?

oh my god mirror image of my dd who is just 3. I am at my wits end with worry. Every time she gets a slight cold she gets this dreadful cough that can last up to 6 weeks. We made several trips to hospital with her at the start of this year and I kept being fobbed off by the docs by saying it was a virus. she has it again and I saw a doc on wednesday who said it may be asthma. he prescribed her with a blue inhaler. I spoke to him again this morning and he wants to see her again next friday and is going t refer her to a chest specialist for x-rays. My dd cough is very much a choking one and struggles to breathe whilst having a coughing fit and is sometimes sick with it also. The doc also said that for her age and height she should be between 14/15kilos in weight but she is only 12 kilo's.
