Help!!!!!!!! How do I get antibiotics in a my 2yo????

She's got tonsilitis - temp was nearly 41 when I took her to the docs this afternoon . We have antibiotics; it's orange-coloured and smells orangey too but we can't get it down her. Tried spoon and syringe with little joy. More success with the latter but our living room floor and kitchen table is covered in orange goo.

Any suggestions? Am on my own with her tomorrow. Am tempted to ring GP in the morning and ask if there are any other flavours available!

When my dd needed antibiotics at this age, we had the best success with Thomas the Tank Engine yogurts - they're really pink and synthetic, and would disguise the taste of petrol, I reckon.

We did also switch antibiotic to get a better flavour, but tbh it was still grim - orangey may be as good as it gets.

Does your DD understand about medicines making you better etc? Lots of chatting about it might make her decide to take it, maybe telling her teddy/dolly is poorly too and they are having some and are feeling better. Sorry, I know how stubborn a sickly toddler is but I just can't imagine how you might sneak it into her.

Is it definately bacterial tonsillitis?

We've put it in the milk before now (which Dr was fine with). DD's antibiotics have only been banana flavoured so far, so not too bad in milk.

DOes DD drink orange juice or squash? Maybe disguise it in there.

Bribery? One spoon ABs = few choc buttons?

manchestermummy · 11/11/2009 20:48

She's only 2.1 so I'm not quite sure she understands that medicine makes her better. Good tip Thomas the Tank Engine yoghurts, might get some in the morning (she needs 4 doses a day though!!).

Her glands were up and she fell asleep on the living room floor (this is a child who naps 1 day out of 20 during the day now). Poor thing - I feel terrible!

Ahh yes, bribery might be well worth a try. Chocolate would defo take away the horrible taste too.

Hmmm, could try juice but we only have apple in the house at the mo! Worth a try though...

def mix it in with juice. my 3.5 ds1 just had chest and throat infection and he wont take anti b's. just make sure you mix it thoroughly as it tends to curdle and you have to make sure she drinks it straight away so i would put it in her first drink of the day and only make it a small one to make sure she drinks it all.

We have had similar problems in the past. If all else fails you may be able to get the anti biotics as a suppository. But def call your GP as they are used to this problem and may have many alternatives or tips.

ds2 never used to like taking medicines until we started calling them Mr Strong juice which led him to believe he would have super powers for the afternoon if he took it. It worked and he's not ended up with a superiority complex about his abilities now he's almost 8!

swanriver · 12/11/2009 11:25

I had to mix it with juice and pretend it had nothing to do with the medicine at all. Once he knew medicine was in the juice he rejected the juice too.

If you're wondering - Green and Black's dark chocolate ice cream seems to have done the trick

well done

Every time ds gets this I ask the doctor and the pharmacist why they can't make it nicer tasting. FGS Calpol tastes nice, I don't see why they can't try a bit harder. That orange stuff is vile.

I go with the choc buttons bribery approach too.

CrossWhy · 13/11/2009 22:50

The only antibiotic I ever get complaints about in my pharmacy is the "orange one". I wish there was another flavour the antibiotic came in because the orange one does not work and have had personal experience of my ds2 being sick over the kitchen table after he bravely swallowed some of it.
