Eye muscle surgery

I just wanted to share that from today my DS (15 months old) is on the waiting list at St George's Hospital.
He has strabismus and was officially diagnosed this July, we noticed that something was not ok with his eyes since last january, he was just 6 months and after waiting and waiting for referrals and appointments, today the doctor said that the only way to correct it is through Eye Muscle surgery, so hopefully everything will be over by February.
I'm very sad thinking of my little man going through general anaesthetic.

The GA is the easy part. It's not nice watching them go to sleep in this way, but it's ok. You will get used to it.

It's the recovery bit that won't be so nice.

My DS2 has been under GA four times. Not for eye surgery, but for other health problems.

p.s. I think it is a disgrace that you were made to wait over a year for his treatment!

veronikka,dd2 has had 3 surgery's on her eye's for the same thing,
at 5months 8 months and 18 months.
Apart from being sick after the second surgery she was fine and didn't appear to be in much pain.
She was in and out of hospital with in a few hours and the worse thing was probably the nil by mouth.

They usually take children in age order if the can so your ds will hopefully be on of the first.

Try not to worry, I'm sure its as hard on the mothers as the dc's.

veronikka my nephew has g.a. every 6months for investigation into his eyes. he has no sight in 1 eye and no optic nerve. i have to take him in to go to sleep as his mum cant bring herself to do it. it is upsetting but you do get used to it. he is 7 now and never mentions it so i assume he doesnt even remember. good luck and try not to worry too much.

veronikka, she has perfect vision now, You can only see the turn when she's very tired.

She had a congenital bilateral strabismus (very cross eyed from birth)
The first 2 ops she had were botox into the eye muscles then the 3rd was cutting the eye muscles, She also had 4 years on and off patching.

So worth it though, She had very little vision in he right eye to begin with, now only one line between her eyes.

She doesn't remember the op's but she misses the patches as she used to enjoy all the attention she got.

LargeGlassofRed I'm glad that everything is fine.

My son who is 5 just had squint surgery last week. It looks like it has worked well and he is going for an appointment on Tuesday. I think it is definitely worse for the parents! He wasn't really too worried about it at all. He had drops for week and lots of calpol and ibuprofen as it was a bit sore at first. Now it isn't bothering him at all but still looks a bit red.
