ds (age 3ish) has had a cough which sounded v chesty when coughing - he hasnt complained about it and not had high temp or signs of chest infection other than lots of coughing through night but doc listenend and said sounded like a creaky old man and prescribed ant biotic amoxycillin on Thurs and avised to use inhaler till they kicked in - since then he had 2 doses that day (thurs)then 3 doses on the fri, sat and today - hes asleep now and coughing and sounds v rattly still - like a productive cough but not clearing it if that makes sense? Am due back at work on Wed and wonder if i should run him back in Mon/ tue if no clearer.

Not absolutely certain but I think some anti b's do take longer to work and some don't take effect completely until after the course is finished (hence why they always say take the whole course)(not sure about amoxycillin). You could always ring the surgery first thing tomorrow and ask the gp to call you after surgery tomorrow and clarify the time it will take or if not, he'll tell you to bring him back.
Or you could pop to chemist's and ask the pharmacist.

thanks - when he coughs today it does seem as if its a clearing cough and clear snot leakage has kicked in so am hopeful.
