Referal to ENT for DD's hearing

DD has failed a couple of hearing tests and has an appointment with and ENT consultant in a few weeks. She has lots of gunk in her middle ear, so glue ear I think.

Can anyone tell me what to expect and what to ask please, so that we can go in prepared.

I think the main issue becomes whether to go for grommets or adopt a wait and see approach. factors will probably include whether your daughter has a history of ear infections, extent of hearing problem and effects and how old she is etc. It seems to vary from one consultant to another how soon they advise to go for grommets.If grommets it is generally a day procedure but does involve general anaesthetic.

There have been a few threads on this (we have been down the grommets road) so do a search here on mumsnet or if the search facility still not working here, google mumsnet, glue ear, grommets.

hopefully if she cant hear properly and thats down to glue ear grommets may sort it out. dont know about your daughters case in particular of course but when thats the only problem children can then catch up to their peers once its sorted out

they might do another hearing test, might not (depends on the consultant)

with a speech delay as well as the hearing, they are more likely to want to do something I think

they also may take out any excess wax in the outer part with a little hoover (they did this with dd and I was amazed at the hard rock like wax that came out!)

Thanks guys. She has no other issues so I'm thinking that having her hearing sorted will sort her out.
