Oh no- worms!!!!

OMG I am so stressed, staying at sisters who has 4 month old twins. DD (6) just woke up needing a poo and saying she had an itchy bottom. Took her to the loo and there are worms! Will obviously take her to pharmacy tomorrow and not let her hold babies but any advice/experience in this area would be fab! Have we infected the babies? Are they at any serious risk or is it routine and not as bad as I am feeling.

It can be quite common. There are several over the counter options, Ovex being one of them.

Good hygiene and washing everything as high a temperature to kill off the eggs is a must, to stop the cycle of eggs reinfecting etc. The children can pick them up from anywhere but it can cause sleep disruptions as that's when the worms lay their eggs by biting outside. Try applying some vaseline or thick nappy cream, but keep pants on DD at night times.

NB: everyone needs treating at the same time. You may need to seek advice about 4 month olds, as I'm not sure if they can have the medication.

Don't panic - threadworms are completely harmless, even to babies.

All done and dealt with. I have researched it so thoroughly I am now an expert on the subject. Apparently 40% of children can have them at any one time. They are harmless and do not need to be treated as the cycle can be broken with extra hygiene precautions. I have treated us all though- unwilling to wait!

Doctor thinks there is an increase in worms as schools not allowed to use strong chemicals any more!
