2yr old pooing while sleeping - is this normal?

DS 24 months has started pooing during the night in the last month or so. There is nothing weird about the poo and he still does it during the day as well. In total it is no more or less than before. He has not had a change in his diet.

It causes problems as the poor love only wakes up when it starts to burn his wee bum and he wakes up red raw and screaming. Obviously this means a broken night's sleep for me and DH too as someone has to change the nappy.

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that babies stopped pooing during the night fairly early on and that seemed to have been the case for us, so I am surprised that this has started again. Is this normal or a sign that something is wrong?

of course it is normal

however, if his diet has changed recently or he has been poorly then that may be an explanation

but not necessarily something to be worried about

Ds2, nearly 3, does this very very occasionally. Almost always when he has had lots of fresh fruit and veg for supper, or has had too much dairy produce. We know he is slightly dairy-intolerant, and the last time this happened discovered the following day that nursery had accidentally let him have some goat's milk. We also try to have cooked or starchy suppers, and fresh stuff earlier in the day.

Try smearing his bum with plenty of Sudocrem when you put him to bed. He will probably still wake to ask for a change, but will at least be in less pain.

Thanks guys. We haven't changed his diet but I guess his reactions could have changed. I'll keep an eye out to see if there is a food related pattern.

We always lather him in sudocrem at bedtime. He's lathered in metanium tonight though as he is pretty sore after a few pooey nights!

And poor you, too! Broken nights are not fun, and you probably thought they'd finished by now.
