My daughter's farts smell of cat poo

She is 17 weeks and is exclusively breast fed. She used to poo anywhere up to 8 time a day - she was on anti-biotics for the first 10 weeks of life.

Since coming off the anti-bios, she has poo-ed less and less. She is now only pooing once a week. But when she does it stinks. And she is a regular farter and that also stinks. Do you think she has a stomach infection? I though breast fed babies poo/farts were supposed to smell of roses?

I didn't breast-feed mine [evil mother emoticon] so never expected oil of roses, but if she's only pooing once a week I'd guess - and I stress guess - that she's a touch dehydrated and certainly constipated.

I know what I'd suggest (and what works) with formula-fed babies, but I'm wary of being shot down in flames, and know nothing about EBF babies, so I'll say nothing more.

Unless I'm asked.

Thanks - what would you do in your situation. I;ve been eating figs, plums and apricots til the cows come home and it has made no difference

OK, when my formula-fed DGS was constipated, a small amount of brown sugar in water (about a quarter teaspoon in three or four fluid ounces) was given, and everything moved the next day. If you don't have bottles you could try tea-spooning it into his mouth, you don't need to give the whole lot.

Dilute orange juice also works.

Alternatively, breast-feeding friends have found that eating citrus fruits - orange, grapefruit, and in one case peaches - gets things moving. One friend had an unexpected result after Xmas dinner of venison...

Not that I am suggesting that oldladyknowsnothing! But I think you will get more ideas/suggestions from people who have had the same problem as well.

Hi - my boy (20 weeks) never learned to latch on properly so had to be formula fed from 1 week old. since then he went from pooing several times a day to once every 24 hrs to once every 3 days. the longer the time between poos the worse it smells when it finally does come out! in the beginning it really seemed to bother him, i.e. he would have a poo then literally 5 mins later and for the following 24 hrs he would be straining and straining and getting more and more upset that he couldn't get it out. It used to break my heart and all I could do was hold him while he went through it. The HV and GP were absolutely useless and just said babies liked to make a production of goigng to the loo! Heis still constipated but I guess he's got used to the length of time between poos and it doesn't seem to bother him anymore - it does me though!

OldLadyKnowsNothing - another GP told me on the quiet the one about the brown sugar but it never seems to work for us! I have't had the courage to try the orange juice - yet....

Maybe I'll give it a go...

ds pooed daily for a couple of weeks then from 2 weeks until 5 months old pooed once ever 7 - 10 days, and farted like a... dunno, a filthy smelly old monster, but the minute he went on to solids he pooed once or twice a day, and doesn't do smelly farts.

imo the antibiotics are a red herring and she's just doing that classic bf baby thing of getting the best out of her milk.

and strongly recommends that you post this in breastfeeding topic where they will tell you that all is well, and this is what bf babies do

Garlic used to do it for my 1st born... if I had a garlicky meal he used to get the trots...

oldladyknowsnothing, I really don't mean to disrespect you, and I love your name, but exactly how old are you? My Mum is 69 and would probably give similar advice to you!

I'm 47, MinkyBorage; but babies don't change much from one generation to another.

sometimes the anti-bs can interupt the stomach flora, by destroying all the good and bad bacteria - I know my LO had anti-b's when she was a newborn and I was advised to do the following - take acidopholous and a good vitamin C. (I was BF'ing also)
