ds2 is ill , please advise

hes 10. hes been ill for 2 days with a high temp, headache , shivering , coughing and sneezing.
ive been alternating calpol and neurofen every 3-4 hours.
the calpol doesnt seem to do much though and the neurofen only keeps him happy for 3 hours max.
he last had neurofen at 4pm and calpol at 7pm and his temperature is 39 and he is shivering like mad.
what do i do?
i think its probably a virus and after being up all night im running out of steam!

both of you! I am not up to scratch on the current dosing advice but perhaps you should ring NHS direct for some moral support and reassurance? They might want him to see the out of hours Dr.

That is a high temp to go on so long. I think you shoudl ring someone really, he might want something for it...08454647 in case you haven't got number xx

Oh poor you, poor him. Do ring either your out of hours or NHS direct for advise if you are worried.

In the mean time make sure he drinks lots of fluids; water with a bit of fruit juice through a straw, and keep him in bed with a sheet or blanket. It sounds like an infection of some sort. Have you checked tonsils?

thanks. i did wonder about swine flu although as i understand theres not much to be done for it is there.
im not sure about that tamiflu

i reckon tamiflu no use unless you take it within a day or so of start tbh

from what I have heard..

give nurofen only three times a day with or after food. and calpol can be given every 4-6hourly but no more than four times in a 24 hour period.

other than that sponge them down with a tepid cloth or use a fan..even if they shiver slightly. Dont be tempted to wrap them up otherwise they will get too hot.
